Gastric sleeve

Gastric sleeve surgery, also called sleeve gastrectomy, is a bariatric surgery procedure. It removes a large portion of your stomach, leaving behind a narrow “sleeve.” Reducing your stomach helps restrict calories and reduce hunger signals. This surgery is offered to help people with clinically severe obesity achieve effective weight loss.

The gastric sleeve operation removes about 80% of your stomach, leaving behind a tubular “sleeve,” about the size and shape of a banana.

  1. You will need to remain in the hospital for the first two to three days after surgery
  2. No shower for first 24 hours
  3. During first week, discomfort starts to disappear, some bruising may occur. You need to start walking and stay hydrated. Eating and drinking is hard because of the reduced stomach size
  4. You can return to non-strenuous work after two weeks
  5. By 3 weeks, most patients are feeling well enough to return to daily activities
  6. You will need to wait four to five weeks before exercising

Patients generally lose 60% to 70% of the excess weight over 18 months. During the first weeks, you could lose 10 to 20 pounds and the next 6 months 50% of the excess weight.

To allow the stomach to heal properly after the surgery, the first weeks the diet consists of a full liquid diet, then slowly change to soft food and finally to regular food in small portions.
